Venice Entrance Fee: What You Need to Know Before You Visit

If you’re planning a trip to Venice, there’s one newer thing you should know about before you arrive: the Venice entrance fee. It sounds scarier than it is, but once you understand how it works, it’s actually pretty straightforward.

Venice introduced this fee to help manage overtourism and protect the historic city. It applies only on specific busy days, usually in spring and summer, and only to day visitors.

Who Has to Pay the Venice Entrance Fee?

You need to pay the entrance fee if:

  • You are entering the historic center of Venice on one of the designated fee days
  • You are visiting Venice for the day and not staying overnight
  • You are 14 years or older

If you’re staying overnight in Venice, you do not need to pay the fee. Hotels and apartments already charge a tourist tax, so you just need to register online to get a free exemption QR code.

How Much Is the Venice Entrance Fee?

  • €5 per person if you book at least 4 days in advance
  • €10 per person if you book 3 days before or on the same day

You pay online through the official Venice access platform and receive a QR code. Inspectors may check this at entry points into the city.

The entrance fee is usually enforced between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM on the selected dates. If you enter Venice before the checks begin, you won’t be stopped or charged. Early morning visitors often walk straight in without paying.

That said, enforcement rules can change, so it’s always best to double check the official site before your visit on the official site.

Does the Fee Apply to Murano, Burano, or Other Islands?

No. The entrance fee applies only to Venice’s historic center.

If you’re only visiting islands like Murano, Burano, or Lido, and you do not pass through the historic center, the fee does not apply.

Where Can You Buy the Ticket or Register for Exemption?

You must do this online in advance on the official site. There are no physical ticket booths in Venice for the entrance fee. Once registered, you’ll receive a QR code on your phone that you may be asked to show.

Because dates, prices, and enforcement days change, always check the official Venice entrance fee website before your trip. And like everything else, just buy it on the official site, it is 5€, there are many sites that will make you pay more and it is not necessary.

It is not complicated, just requires a bit of planning. If you’re staying overnight, you’re fine.If you’re visiting for the day, book ahead if possible.

And if you’re an early riser, that works in your favor. We visited Venice 3 days in a row, were not staying in Venice’s historic center, and every day we entered early in the morning, around 7am, did not have to pay for the entrance, and were not stopped at checkpoint.

Venice is still Venice. This fee doesn’t change the magic, it just means being a little more prepared before you arrive.

Until next time, be mesmerized ❤️
