Unique Things to Do in Japan – Experiences You’ll Never Forget

Japan is a country that blends ancient traditions with futuristic innovation, offering some of the most unique experiences in the world. If you’re looking for something beyond the usual sightseeing, here are some authentic and unforgettable activities to add to your Japan itinerary.

Dress Up in a Kimono

If you’ve ever wanted to step into the past and experience traditional Japan, wearing a kimono is the way to do it.

There are so many kimono rental shops across Tokyo, and honestly, walking around in one just makes the whole day feel extra special. They help you pick everything — the kimono, the obi belt, even the little accessories. And yes, there’s a specific way to tie and wear everything, but don’t worry, they’ll handle it all for you. You just stand there and get transformed.

You can book your experiance with Maikoya Kimono & Tea Ceremony they offer their services in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

Take Part in a Tea tasting

Japanese tea ceremonies aren’t just about drinking tea—they’re about mindfulness, tradition, and art. The ritual of preparing and serving matcha (green tea) has been practiced for centuries, and experiencing it firsthand gives you a deep appreciation for Japanese culture.

During the ceremony, a tea master will guide you through the process, explaining the history, techniques, and etiquettebehind this sacred tradition. You’ll also get to whisk your own matcha using a bamboo whisk and enjoy a traditional sweets that complements the bitterness of the tea.

Where to book

Our experience: We did the six-course tea tasting at Sakurai, and it was such a cool experience. They prepare each tea right in front of you, explain where it comes from, how it’s made, and honestly, it just felt super calming and special. Plus, everything smelled amazing.

Then there was the Maikoya tea ceremony, totally different vibe, but just as interesting. It’s more traditional and formal, but not in a boring way. The lady guiding us explained why ceramics matter so much in tea culture, like how you’re supposed to turn the bowl so your guest sees the painted design. We also learned how to properly whisk matcha (not as easy as it looks, by the way).

Meet a Geisha in Kyoto

Meeting a real geisha is one of the most unique cultural experiences you can have in Japan. These highly trained entertainers dedicate years to perfecting traditional dance, music, and tea ceremony. Kyoto is the best place to meet them, especially in Gion, the city’s famous geisha district.

At Gion Maikoya, you can do more than just watch a performance—you can actually interact with a geisha and learn about their world. Here’s what you can do:

  • Attend a Private Geisha Tea Ceremony – Join a tea ceremony hosted by a geisha or maiko (apprentice geisha). They’ll prepare matcha tea in the traditional way and share insights about their training and lifestyle.
  • Dress as a Geisha – If you want to step into their shoes (literally), you can get a full geisha makeover, complete with the signature white makeup, an elaborate kimono, and traditional hairstyle.
  • Enjoy a Geisha Performance – Watch an authentic dance and music performance, which geishas spend years mastering. Some experiences even allow you to play traditional games with them, just like guests at exclusive teahouses.

Get a Fortune at a Temple

If you want a glimpse into your future, luck, or destiny, head to a Japanese shrine or temple and try getting an omikuji (fortune paper). These fortunes range from great luck to, well… not-so-great luck.

The process is simple:

  1. Make a small donation (usually 100 yen).
  2. Shake a wooden box until a stick with a number falls out.
  3. Match the number to a drawer and take your fortune paper.

If you get good luck, keep the paper as a charm. If you get bad luck, don’t panic—just tie it onto a special rack at the temple to leave the misfortune behind.

📍 Where to try: Senso-ji Temple (Tokyo) or Kiyomizu-dera (Kyoto).

Our experience: We got bad luck at Senso-ji, which was… unfortunate. But hey, at least we got to experience a fun tradition, and you tye the bad fortune on the rack and it’s gone, hopefully?
