We’ve been to Lisbon a few times now, and it kind of just grew on us. It wasn’t like love at first sight, but more like… every time we came back, we liked it more, and then we just kept coming back to it.

The food is great, the weather is almost always nice, and everywhere you look, it just looks good. It’s a bit hilly, not gonna lie, but you get used to it. Or at least you tell yourself you do.

So here are some of the spots we think are worth your time in Lisbon.

Praça do Comércio

This is Lisbon’s main square, right by the river, and you’ll probably end up here at some point without even trying because the roads naturally lead you here.

It looks impressive, big open space, yellow buildings, the arch, everything very symmetrical. It used to be the main entrance to the city back in the day, when ships were arriving here, which is kind of cool when you think about it. The bronze statue in the center depicts King José I on horseback, symbolizing Lisbon’s rebirth.

But yeah… it’s also very crowded. Full of tourists, street sellers, people trying to sell you… ehm… random stuff.

Definitely worth seeing, taking a few photos, but we didn’t stay here too long. There are nicer, quieter places nearby.

Cais das Colunas

Right next to the square, there are these two columns by the water.

It’s a simple spot, but actually really nice. People just sit there, look at the river. At sunset, locals gather on the steps with drinks and music, making it one of the most peaceful golden-hour spots in the city.

Glória Funicular

This is one of those very “Lisbon” things.

A small tram going up a steep hill, covered in graffiti, a bit chaotic, but kind of fun. We managed to ride it before it closed, but as of 2025, it’s temporarily out of service after an accident. It was one of the oldest still-operating funiculars in Europe and a symbol of Lisbon’s steep charm.

They’re planning to reopen it, but for now, you’ll have to walk.

Which honestly… is fine, firm ass incoming. And, you’re going up anyway for the view.

Miradouros (Viewpoints)

Miradouros (Viewpoints)

“Miradouro” means viewpoint in Portuguese, and Lisbon has dozens. This is probably our favourite thing about Lisbon.

There are viewpoints everywhere. Like, you walk for 10 minutes, suddenly there’s another one. And each one somehow looks different.

Red rooftops, river, bridges, random streets, it just works from every angle.

Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara

This landscaped terrace might be the best panorama in town. At sunset, it’s magical—especially with a drink from the nearby kiosk. Here is the location.

R. da Bica de Duarte Belo

You’ve seen this one on postcards, the yellow tram climbing between pastel houses with the river shining behind. One of Lisbon’s most photographed streets. You can find the location here.

Miradouro de Santa Luzia

A peaceful terrace with blue-and-white azulejos and a view over Alfama. There’s almost always a guitarist here, giving it a romantic feel. Find the spot here.

Miradouro das Portas do Sol

Right next to Santa Luzia, this is one of Lisbon’s most iconic viewpoints. The view of whitewashed houses tumbling toward the Tagus River is breathtaking. Find the location here.

Miradouro da Graça

A local favorite. There’s a small café under the trees, perfect for cooling off while soaking in panoramic city views. You can find it here.

Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

This is the best spot in the city on the highest part of the city. Lisbon at the palm of your hand. If you are climbing it, good luck. It’s a good workout for sure.

Pink Street

Pink Street

We weren’t sure what to expect here as we are not really party people.

It used to be a red light district, now it’s this bright pink street with bars and clubs.

We first saw it in winter and it was… fine. Not bad, just a bit empty, kinda sad if I’m being honest.

Then we came back in warmer months, and it was completely different. Loud, busy, people everywhere.

If you like nightlife, you’ll probably enjoy it. If not, just enjoy the view.

Time Out Market

Inside a restored 19th-century market hall, this place is a foodie heaven. Time Out invited some of Portugal’s best chefs to open stalls here, and the result is a collection of the city’s top eats under one roof.

This place is basically a food hall, but done really well and it looks really nice. It can get crowded, but the food is actually good, not just “tourist good”. Try local specialties like bacalhau (codfish), piri-piri chicken, and of course, a pastel de nata for dessert, try to eat only one!

Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa)

Built in 1147 after Lisbon was taken from the Moors, this cathedral is the city’s oldest church. It’s a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles due to centuries of reconstructions. We never got inside, we spent way too much time catching the yellow train passing in front of the cathedral, got it on the video, but not on the photo.

Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa)

Sitting high above Alfama, this medieval fortress dates back to the 11th century when it was built by the Moors. After Lisbon was captured by Portugal’s first king, it became a royal residence. Today, it offers one of the best panoramic views of the city. Peacocks roam freely inside the castle walls, adding to its fairytale vibe.

National Pantheon

This majestic white-domed church took nearly 300 years to complete. It now serves as the final resting place for Portugal’s national heroes, including Amália Rodrigues, the Queen of Fado. Climb to the rooftop terrace for one of the best 360° views of Alfama and the Tagus River.

Belém Tower & Monument of the Discoveries

These two landmarks sit along the Tagus River in Belém, once the launch point for Portuguese explorers. These are a bit outside the center, but easy to reach.

Belém Tower

Belém Tower was built in the early 1500s to protect Lisbon’s harbor, but today it’s one of the city’s most beautiful landmarks. The style is very “Lisbon”, lots of rope-like carvings, seashells, and little maritime details that celebrate Portugal’s age of exploration. Even if you don’t go inside, it’s worth seeing up close because the design is so unique.

Monument of the Discoveries

The Monument of the Discoveries was built in 1960 to honor Portugal’s great explorers like Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan. It’s shaped like the front of a ship, pointing straight toward the water, which feels very symbolic when you’re standing beneath it. It’s a place that celebrates the era when Portugal sailed to every corner of the world.

As we said, bit outside of the city, but it’s a lovely walk along the river, with the bridge views, perfect.

MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology

You don’t even need to go inside MAAT to enjoy it. The building itself is a piece of art, with its smooth, wave-like shape right along the river. You can walk across the rooftop for amazing views of the 25 de Abril Bridge and the waterfront. It’s modern, photogenic, and a really nice place for a slow stroll. And the view of the bridge is just wonderful. We are ashamed to admin that we still haven’t been inside, but we will return.

Jerónimos Monastery

Jerónimos Monastery was built in the early 1500s to celebrate Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India, and today it’s a UNESCO site. The cloisters are full of detail, stone arches, maritime symbols, little patterns everywhere you look. It’s one of those places where you’d probably spend a lot of time just looking around.

Inside, you’ll also find the tomb of Vasco da Gama.

And now, a bit embarrassing… we still haven’t actually been inside. The one time we planned to go, it was so crowded that we just looked at the line, looked at each other, and went straight for pastel de nata instead. No regrets, but still… maybe next time?

It’s one of Lisbon’s most impressive sights, but also one of the busiest, so if you do want to go in, try to plan it early.

Livraria Bertrand

Recognized by Guinness as the world’s oldest operating bookstore (since 1732), this Chiado institution has hosted writers and thinkers for centuries. It looks cute, but maybe not that impressive, I don’t know. If you are passing by, and you will be a couple of times, if there are no crowds, come inside and explore. But if it’s crowded, you can skip it.

Marquês de Pombal

This grand statue honors the man who rebuilt Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. The disaster nearly leveled the city, destroying churches, palaces, and much of downtown in a series of quakes, tsunamis, and fires. Under his leadership, Lisbon was completely redesigned with broad avenues and earthquake-resistant buildings, marking one of Europe’s earliest examples of modern urban planning. And he built Lisbon as you see it today.

Standing tall at the top of Avenida da Liberdade, the Marquês is shown with a lion at his side, symbolizing strength and resilience. It’s a statue that you will see when entering the city center, and it looks like he is just overlooking the city.

Best Time to Visit Lisbon

We visited Lisbon in October and November and we always had a pleasant weather. You just need a light jacket for the evenings, but during the day, short sleeves, dress, perfect. Lisbon has mild weather year-round, but the best times to visit are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).

We would recommended visiting during autumn or winter as there are not that many crowds and it’s not that hot!

How to Get Around Lisbon

Lisbon’s public transport is easy and efficient. We drove in trams, buses, and in metro, and you can pay as you go with your card or phone.

Tram 28 is the most famous route, passing through many of Lisbon’s must-see neighborhoods. Taxis and Bolt rides are affordable alternatives.

But we think that walking is the best way to explore Lisbon. Hills can be a challenge, but at least your butt cheeks will be firm.

Things You Should Know Before Visiting Lisbon

• The hills are no joke: Lisbon is built on seven hills, so wear comfortable shoes, lot’s of walking uphill, but the views will make it worthy.
• Cash and cards: Most places accept cards, but small cafés and markets may prefer cash.
• Safety: Lisbon is generally safe, but keep an eye on your belongings in crowded spots and in Praça do Comércio
• Language: Portuguese is the official language, but everyone speaks English
• Pastéis de Nata: Once you try one, you’ll want another. The original bakery, Pastéis de Belém, is worth the line.

Lisbon is one of those cities where you don’t need a strict plan, but if you only have 24 hours, it helps to have a rough idea of how to move around.

This is how we’d spend a day in Lisbon, based on what we actually enjoyed the most. We have best things, best viewpoints and best food for you in this guide. Hope you like it!

Morning: our favourite breakfast and brunch spot!

So first, let’s start with breakfast, the most important meal of the day, and trust us this one is so worth it!

This is our favourite breakfast and brunch spot in Lisbon, Shakar. We literally went here almost every day we could. The food is just really good and the whole place has a nice, relaxed vibe. Menu highlight: chicken tacos!

After that, once your bellies are full, start walking downhill towards the center.

You’ll be walking under trees, mostly in the shade, and since it’s downhill, it’s actually a very easy walk. No stress, no rushing, just a nice way to start the day and ease into Lisbon. And the best part, it’s downhill, so no suffering yet.

Next, head towards the Glória Funicular.

We know… it’s currently not operational, which is a bit unfortunate because it’s one of those classic Lisbon things. But it still leads you up to Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, and that’s the real reason you’re here.

The view from up there is one of the best in the city. Rooftops, castle, everything in front of you. Definitely worth the walk.

From here, continue towards the Carmo Archaeological Museum.

It’s set inside the ruins of an old church that was partially destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. The roof was never rebuilt, so you’re walking through these open arches with the sky above you. It’s a bit different from the usual museums, and honestly, even just seeing it from the outside is worth the stop.

Right after that, you’ll reach the Santa Justa Lift.

You’ll definitely notice it, it’s that tall iron elevator that looks a bit out of place in the middle of Lisbon. It connects the lower streets with the upper part of the city. You can go up, but the lines are usually long, so we just looked at it and moved on. Now there is apparently a way to go up, without the lift, but we still haven figured it out, we’ll keep you updated!

Midday: Chiado & lunch

From here, you’re already in the Chiado area, so it’s a good moment to stop by Livraria Bertrand.

It’s the oldest operating bookstore in the world, which sounds impressive, and it is… but it also gets very crowded. If it’s calm, go in. If not, just peek inside and continue.

For lunch, head down to Time Out Market.

It’s busy, but the food is actually really good. You’ve got a lot of options in one place, so it’s easy to find something you like. There is local food, international cuisine, pastel de nata, of course! And the space is gorgeous to hang out.

Afternoon: river walk & classic postcard Lisbon

After lunch, walk towards the river.

This part is really nice, fresh air, pretty views and a bit of a break from the narrow crowded streets.

You’ll pass by:

• Cais das Colunas, simple steps by the water where people just sit and relax
• Praça do Comércio, the big main square

Enjoy the square and the views, sometimes the put the iconic Lisbon sign here which is great for that postcard photo. And if some sellers approach you, just ignore them.

Before heading uphill again, stop at Gelateria La Romana dal 1947.

Honestly, one of the best gelatos we had in Lisbon. At this point in the day, you’ve earned it.

Afternoon: Alfama & views again

Now head towards Lisbon Cathedral (Sé). It’s the oldest church in the city, and you’ll probably pass it naturally on your way into Alfama, the most “Lisbon” part of the city. If you catch the yellow tram passing bye, snap that iconic photo.

From here, just keep walking uphill. You’ll reach two gorgeous viewpoints:

• Miradouro de Santa Luzia
• and then continue towards Castelo de São Jorge

This part of Lisbon feels completely different. Narrow streets, a bit messy, but really interesting and super colourful.

Take your time here. No need to rush. Just enjoy the walks and views.

If you want you can continue up and reach Castelo de São Jorge and enjoy some history or even better views of the city from above.

Evening: dinner with fado

And now, the special part, for dinner, go to Canto da Atalaia. This is where you end the day properly, Portuguese style. It’s a place with amazing local dishes, live Fado music, and that whole atmosphere Lisbon is known for. Even if you don’t understand the lyrics, you’ll get the feeling.

After dinner, time for everyone favourite, pastel de nata. We think that the best ones are at Manteigaria. They are warm, creamy, with a hint of cinnamon.

Best Time to Visit Lisbon

Lisbon is one of those cities you can visit pretty much all year round.

We’ve been in April and November (both early and late November), and every time the weather was really pleasant. Warm during the day, a bit cooler in the evening, but overall very comfortable for walking around. Most days we were in short sleeves., forgot to put sunscreen, don’t be like us.

Summer is great if you want guaranteed sun, but it gets hot and crowded. And with all the hills, it can be a bit much in the middle of the day, and you end up catching your breath more than usual.

Spring, autumn, even winter, Lisbon is always pretty and alway a bit warmer than the rest of European cities.

How to Get Around Lisbon

Getting around Lisbon is actually really easy.

The metro is great, and the best part is you can just tap your credit card and pay as you go. No need to figure out tickets or machines.

There are also trams, which are fun to use at least once, especially the classic yellow trams.

But honestly, you’ll be walking a lot. A lot.

There’s no way around it. Lisbon is built on hills, so expect a lot of up and down. Good shoes are a must, otherwise you’ll feel it very quickly. So, good shoes, water and you’ll be good.

I don’t know why, but Lisbon just keeps growing on us.

Every time we come back, we like it a bit more. Maybe it’s the food, maybe the views, or maybe it’s just an excuse to come back for another pastel de nata… or breakfast at Shakar. That alone is probably reason enough.

We’re pretty sure this won’t be our last time here.

Two days in Lisbon is actually a really nice amount of time. Not rushed, not too slow. You can see a lot, eat a lot, and still have those random moments where you’re just walking and not really doing anything.

This is how we’d spend 2 days in Lisbon, based on how we actually explored it on one of many occasions we visited this lovely city.

Day 1: Alfama, History & City Views

We’d start straight in Alfama.

No slow warm-up, just go into it, to show you what Lisbon is really about. Narrow streets, a bit confusing, sometimes you’re not even sure where you are, but that’s kind of the point.

At some point you’ll naturally reach Lisbon Cathedral. You can go inside or wait to catch the yellow tram passing by. Continue your way to Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol. They’re right next to each other, and honestly, some of the best views in Lisbon. The perfect welcome.

We stopped here longer than planned. Sat for a bit, didn’t really do anything. That happens a lot in Lisbon. Just enjoying the views.

From there, continue up towards Castelo de São Jorge. Now you can walk there or hop on iconic yellow tram.

We didn’t even rush to go inside. The views from around it are already really good, so even if you just walk around it, it’s worth it.

Then slowly make your way down towards National Pantheon.

This one actually surprised us. That big white dome you keep seeing from viewpoints, this is it. If you go up, the view is really nice, a bit different from the others.

After that, head down towards the river and eventuality you’ll reach Praça do Comércio and Cais das Colunas. It can get crowded, but it’s one of those iconic Lisbon places you have to experience.

If you’re hungry, Time Out Market is close by. Easy option, lots of good food, and the space just looks incredible.

Now let’s get back to the city, towards Chiado. You’ll probably pass the Santa Justa Lift. It looks cool, but it’s temporarily closed. But just seeing the connection to upper city, looks amazing.

Right after that, stop by the Carmo ruins.

That place is actually really interesting. No roof, just arches and sky above you. It was destroyed in the big earthquake and just never rebuild. If you feel like it, check Livraria Bertrand, but only if it’s not packed. We went in, looked around, and left pretty quickly.

For the evening, go for Fado dinner.

We went to Canto da Atalaia, and it was just special. Small place, live singing, nothing too fancy, just good authentic food and that atmosphere Lisbon is known for.

Day 2: Belém, Something Different & More Views

Second day, go to Belém.

It’s a bit outside the center, so just take a tram or you can walk there if you feel like it. the walk is beautiful with river and bridge views.

Walk along the river and you’ll see:

• Belém Tower
• Monument of the Discoveries

Both are close, and tell an important part of history.

Then go to Jerónimos Monastery.

And here’s the thing…

We still haven’t been inside 😄

The one time we wanted to go, the line was so long that we just gave up and went for food instead. Maybe next time.

It looks impressive from the outside though, so it’s still worth coming here.

But we didn’t miss the opportunity to eat some pastel de nata! Now some say the best pastel de nata is in Pastéis de Belém, but we say it’s in Manteigaria. Here, they are right next to each other so it’s perfect to sample them both. Manteigaria ones are a bit creamier, tastier and cinnamony.

After that, head to LX Factory.

This place feels completely different from the rest of Lisbon. More modern, creative, a bit random.

And if you like pretty places, go inside Ler Devagar bookstore, this one is actually worth it. Big space, books everywhere, and just a cool vibe overall.

Head back towards the city in the afternoon.

Now is a good moment to go up again, yes… more hills.

Make your way to Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara.

If the Glória Funicular is still closed, you’ll walk. At this point, you’re used to it anyway.

The view here is one of the best, especially later in the day.

From here, just slowly head down.

You’ll pass through streets you’ve maybe seen before, but it feels different the second time.

Stop by Pink Street if you want. Sometimes it’s lively, sometimes not. Depends on the day.

Where to Eat in Lisbon

Here are some of the places we tried and would go back to.

Breakfast & Brunch

• Shakar – our favourite place in Lisbon for breakfast or brunch. We went here almost every day. Menu highlights for us were the chicken tacos and french toast, but honestly, everything we tried was really good.
• Hygge Kaffe – good option for brunch if Shakar is not open
• The Folks Sé – very good option in city center

Lunch & Dinner

• As Bifanas do Afonso – this is the best place to try the famous Bifana
• Canto da Atalaia – Fado, live music, amazing Portuguese food, and a really nice atmosphere. Reservations are a must here.
• Karater Georgian Bistro – if you want something different
• La Fiorentina – food is good, but skip tiramisu, it’s just a viral thing
• Forno d’Oro – top 50 pizza in Europe
• Tacos La Malquerida

Desserts

• Manteigaria – best pastel de nata in our opinion. Fresh, warm, crispy… you’ll probably go back for a second one. Or just get the package of 6 immediately.
• Gelateria La Romana dal 1947 – try the blueberry, elderflower, lemon flavour, it’s in my top 3 tastes of all time!
• Gelateria La Verde – they have weird tastes that you cannot find everywhere but really good

You walk a lot, eat well, sit at viewpoints longer than you planned, and somehow it all comes together without trying too hard.

Everyone will tell you the best pastel de nata in Lisbon is in Belém.

And to be fair, that’s where it all started. The original recipe dates back to the 1800s, created by monks at the Jerónimos Monastery, who used leftover egg yolks to make these little custard tarts. When the monastery closed, the recipe was sold, and that’s how Pastéis de Belém became a thing.

But we thing there is a better one you should not miss.

When we first visited Lisbon, we wanted to try the famous ones in Belém. But looking at the map, it felt a bit out of the way, so we skipped it and just thought, okay, let’s find something in the city center.

That’s how we ended up at Manteigaria.

At that time, it was just one small place, kind of tucked into a side street. Nothing big, nothing touristy, just a simple shop.

We tried one.

And that was it. We were sold immediately.

That creamy filling, slightly cinnamony, not too sweet, and the pastry… crispy, but not overly crispy. Just the right balance. We looked at each other and just went back to buy two more.

After that, it kind of became our routine.

After dinner, after brunch, sometimes just randomly, we’d stop by and get a box. Usually a 4-pack, telling ourselves it’s “for later”, which never really worked out that way.

Then on our third trip to Lisbon, we finally went to Belém.

By that time, Manteigaria had expanded, and of course, there was one right next to Pastéis de Belém.

So we did what anyone would do.

We had to compare them.

We stood in line for the Belém ones, got them fresh and warm, and then grabbed Manteigaria right after without any waiting.

And honestly, it surprised us a bit.

The Belém ones were definitely fresher, straight out of the oven. Very crispy, almost too crispy, and they give you cinnamon and sugar separately so you can add it yourself.

Sounds nice, but the taste felt a bit… plain. Good, but missing something.

The Manteigaria ones, even though they weren’t as fresh in that exact moment, just had more flavour.

Creamier, richer, already slightly cinnamony, and the pastry had that perfect crunch without overdoing it.

They just tasted better to us.

So yeah, even after trying the original ones in Belém…

We still prefer Manteigaria.

But that’s just us.

Try both, see what you think, and come to your own conclusion. Worst case, you eat too many pastéis de nata, which is not really a problem.

Lisbon is one big postcard. You don’t even have to try, everywhere you look there’s something pretty. A viewpoint, tiles, colorful houses, it just keeps going.But then there are a few places that stand out a bit more. The ones that are just… perfect for a photo.

Lisbon Cathedral street (with tram)

You’ll probably walk by this one anyway.

Tram going past the cathedral, narrow street, a bit messy, but that’s what makes it so nice. You might need to wait a bit for the tram, but once it comes, you’ll know that this is the perfect photo spot. As you can see we only got a photo, but we have a video with a tram!

Miradouro da Graça

This one we liked more than expected.

It’s not as polished as some other viewpoints, a bit more local, people just sitting around, but the view is really good. you really get Lisbon at a palm facing a different side.

Tv. São Tomé Crossroad

• Here is the exact location

This is one of those spots where you just stand there for a bit and wait for the tram.

When it passes through that little crossroad, it just looks pretty.

Miradouro de Santa Luzia

Yeah, this one is popular, but for a good reason.

Tiles, flowers, view over Alfama… it’s all there. It can get busy, but if you wait a bit or come at a better time, you’ll get a good shot.

Random alleys (the best photo spots)

Some of our favourite photos are from places like this.

Nothing famous, no crowds, just small streets, nice light, and you kind of stop without planning to.

This is where Lisbon is actually the prettiest. There is a local shop at the corner and you can just enjoy the everyday life pass by. Walk around the staircase and enjoy the art gallery!

Don’t overthink it.

Lisbon surprised us a bit with food. There are so many options and food at restaurants is no that expensive compared to some other European cities.

You’ve got traditional Portuguese places, but also a lot of really good international spots. So we tried a bit of everything.

Here are the places we kept going back to, or still think about.

Shakar (breakfast & brunch we couldn’t stop going to)

Shakar

This is easily our favourite food spot in Lisbon.

We went here so many times that we almost went through the entire menu. But in my humble opinion, the chicken tacos are the best thing on the menu. Fresh, full of flavour, just really really good.

But honestly, everything is great.

Eggs benedict, shakshuka, french toast, matcha, fresh juices, lemonades… you can’t really go wrong here.

This is one of those places you plan to visit once and then end up coming back again. And we will be back for sure!

Fado Dinner (portugese food + experience)

Canto da Atalaia

It’s one of those places where you go not just for food, but for the whole experience.

Live Fado, small space, a bit intimate, and really good Portuguese food.

We tried a few things across two visits, starters with meat in the chef’s sauce, then mains like beef or fish, and everything was just really solid.

We still remember this place not just because of the food but the whole intimate atmosphere. It’s a must!

Lisbon has great international food too!

We didn’t just eat Portuguese food.

Lisbon has a really good mix of international spots.

• Karater Georgian Bistro – something completely different, but really good. If you want to switch it up, definitely worth it.

If you want something quick and easy:

• In Noodles – simple, fast, Asian food, perfect when you don’t want to overthink it
• Buga Ramen – they have a few spots around the city and it’s always a safe choice
• and you can’t miss Time Out Market, perfect place to try a bit of everything and great place to hang out.

Dessert

You can’t go to Lisbon and not eat the best pastéis de nata.

For us, it’s Manteigaria. Just grab a box and you’re set. That creamy, slightly cinnamony filling, crispy pastry… it’s just perfect. We always plan to bring a few back home but they never make it.

Lisbon gets warm, and at some point you’ll want something cold.

• Gelateria La Romana dal 1947 – this one really stood out. Blackberry, elderberry, lemon… those three together in one flavour is my top 3 flavour of all time.
• Gelateria La Verde – they do more seasonal and slightly “weird” flavours, but in a good way. We tried pumpkin…and it was actually really good.

Lisbon is one of those cities where you don’t need a strict food plan.

Just walk, stop when something looks good, and you’ll probably eat really well.

But yeah… if you’re not sure where to start, start with Shakar and Manteigaria and maybe Time Out Market.

Malta drives on the left side of the road, which can sound intimidating at first, but honestly, it’s manageable. Most cars are small, roads are well-marked, and after a short adjustment period, it starts to feel natural. Plus, because the island is so small, most drives take 20–30 minutes max, which makes planning your days incredibly easy.

Our Experience Renting a Car in Malta

On our trips, we rented small cars, once with Avis and once with Sixt, and had good experiences with both. Rental prices are very reasonable, especially outside peak summer season. For example, in December, we paid around €300 for 10 days for an automatic car with full insurance, which felt like good value.

Malta’s roads go uphill and downhill a lot, and streets can be narrow, especially in villages and older areas. Because of that, we highly recommend choosing an automatic transmission, even though it costs a bit more. If you’re also getting used to driving on the left, it removes a lot of unnecessary stress and makes the whole experience feel safer and more relaxed. And what can be more fun than driving on a sunny island with your windows down, just having the time of your life.

Insurance

We strongly recommend getting full insurance coverage. Roads can be tight, parking spaces small, and local driving style can feel a bit chaotic at times. Having full coverage means you don’t have to worry about scratches, mirrors, or unexpected bumps. Even though we never had any accident on Malta, it’s good to be care free.

You usually have two options:

• Insurance offered directly by the rental company
• Third-party insurance through services like Revolut or worldwide travel insurance providers

We’ve used third-party insurance before and it worked well for us, but make sure you understand what’s covered and how claims work before deciding.

Get yours too.

Where to Pick Up Your Car

Most rental car companies operate from the multi-storey parking garage near Malta International Airport. It’s about a 5-minute walk from the arrivals terminal, signs leading there are clear and easy to find. No shuttle buses needed, which is a big plus after a flight.

Tips on Renting a Car

A few things we’ve learned that really help:

• Book in advance, especially if you want an automatic car or are traveling in high season
• Stick to well-known rental companies like Avis, Sixt, Europcar, or similar
• Prices are usually much better when booked online ahead of time
• Smaller cars are easier to park and navigate through villages
• When you pick up your car, take a full video or photos of the vehicle, inside and out. Even if everything looks fine, it’s always better to be safe than sorry when returning it
• use Apple maps as they have all the new updates, Google Maps drove us to one way streets way to often.

Is Renting a Car in Malta Worth It?

For us, absolutely yes. Renting a car made it easy to explore remote viewpoints, small villages, cliffs, and beaches that would be harder or slower to reach by bus. It also meant we weren’t tied to schedules and could adjust plans on the go. I mean one time we drove all around the island just because we felt like it. And we went to dinners to local restaurants on the other side of the island just because we could do it with the car.

Getting Around Malta by Car

We visited Malta twice, and both times we rented a car. For us, it was hands down the easiest and most flexible way to explore the island.

Renting a car in Malta is relatively affordable, especially if you’re visiting outside of peak summer months. Since the island is small, most places are no more than a 20 to 30-minute drive away, which makes planning your days super easy. One morning you can be in Valletta, and by afternoon you’re watching the sunset from the cliffs.

On Malta, you drive on the left side of the road, which can sound intimidating at first, but if you are a driver, it will be no problem. Most cars are small, roads are generally well maintained, and you get used to it quickly.

For both of our trips, we rented small cars. The first time with Avis, the second with Sixt. One thing we’d strongly recommend is getting an automatic, especially if you’re not used to driving on the left. Malta’s roads go uphill and downhill a lot, and automatic just makes everything feel more relaxed and safer and especially if you are not used to driving on the left.

We’d also suggest taking full insurance. Roads can be narrow, parking spots tight, and locals can drive a bit… creatively. Full coverage gives you peace of mind and lets you focus on enjoying the trip instead of stressing over scratches.

If your plan is to explore viewpoints, beaches, cliffs, and smaller villages, a car gives you complete freedom and saves a lot of time.

Don’t Want to Rent a Car? Use Public Transport

If driving isn’t your thing, Malta does have a well-connected public transport system, mainly based on buses.

The bus network covers the entire island, with 120+ routes and nearly 2.000 stops across Malta and Gozo. It’s the cheapest way to travel, and you can reach most towns and popular sights by bus.

That said, there are a few things to keep in mind. The buses don’t always run exactly on schedule, and during weekends or peak season they can get quite crowded. Travel times can also be much longer compared to driving, especially if you’re heading to more remote areas or need to change buses along the way. It’s absolutely doable, but you’ll want to plan with a bit of flexibility and patience. And I know nobody mentions this, but waiting in the hot sun, when buses are a bit late, not that enjoyable, especially when there is no shade in sight.

You can buy single tickets directly on board using exact change or a contactless card. Prices are usually around €2–€2.50, depending on the season. If you’re staying longer, the 7-day pass for €25 is a great deal and can save you money if you’re moving around a lot.

Multi-day passes are available at:

• Malta International Airport (Arrivals Lounge)
• Valletta Bus Terminal
• Victoria Bus Terminal in Gozo

One thing we can’t recommend enough: use Google Maps. It works extremely well in Malta and will tell you exactly which bus to take, where to board, and when to get off, which makes using public transport much less stressful.

Hop-On Hop-Off Buses

We didn’t personally try this, but it’s worth mentioning if you want an easy overview of the island.

The iSee Malta Hop-on Hop-off buses run set routes around the island and stop at many popular attractions like Mdina, Marsaxlokk, the Blue Grotto, Mosta, and the Three Cities. It’s a relaxed way to see a lot in a short time, especially if you don’t want to plan routes yourself or you only have a couple of days here.

So… Car or Public Transport?

If you want flexibility, short travel times, and access to remote spots, renting a car is the best option. That’s what we chose, and we’d do it again.

If you’re traveling on a tight budget, staying mostly in cities, or prefer not to drive, public transport works, just plan extra time and be patient.

Getting to Gozo is actually very simple, but there are a couple of options depending on whether you’re travelling with a car or not.

We’ve done it ourselves, and once you understand how it works, it’s pretty straightforward.

Option 1: Ferry from Ċirkewwa

This is the main way to get to Gozo.

The ferry runs from Ċirkewwa, which is at the very north of Malta, and takes you to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo.

These are large ferries that carry:

• cars
• passengers
• buses

How It Works

One important thing to know and this confuses people, we were confused twice, as we forgot about it:

• you don’t pay when going to Gozo
• you only pay on the way back to Malta

Since Gozo is only connected to Malta, they charge you when you return.

Ferries run very frequently, every 30-45 minutes in winter and even more often in summer. The crossing takes about 25 minutes, and you will pass Comino island on the way to Gozo.

The ferries has everything covered, toilets, coffee, tea, snacks you can purchase and huge decks to enjoy the view. They even cross during the night, but less frequent.

Prices

• passenger: around €5–€6 return
• car + driver: around €15–€20 return

Prices can change depending on season, but this will give you a good idea if you plan to go to Gozo.

Important Tips

If you’re bringing a car, go early.

Lines can get very long, especially in peak season. We’ve seen queues stretching quite far down the road, and you can end up waiting for multiple ferries. And that was in winter! So take this tip seriously.

If you go early in the morning, it’s much easier and stress-free.

The good thing about getting to Gozo is that ferries run very frequently all year round, 24/7, so you don’t really need to stress about planning it too much. Here is the ferry schedule and even in winter it’s pretty regular, maybe a bit less frequent compared to summer.

Option 2: Fast Ferry from Valletta

If you’re not renting a car, this is actually the best option. There is a fast ferry from Valletta directly to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo. It’s much more convenient if your staying in Sliema or Valletta.

How it works

You can buy your ticket online or at the terminal. Unlike the car ferry, you pay both ways.

It takes around 45 minutes to get there. The fast ferry is not 24/7 like the car ferry, but it still runs frequently enough for easy day trips. The trips start around 6am and until 11pm in the summer, every 1-2 hours. In the winter it’s much less frequent, every 2-3 hours and the last departure is around 8pm, so keep that in mind, check the schedule, so you don’t get stuck on Gozo.
You can also book it in advance, depending on what you want:

Prices

around 10-15€ one way, so it is a bit more expensive.

Important tip

In peak season it’s best to book it advance as it can get really busy.

If you are renting a car, going with a ferry is the best option, you will see amazing views of Comino island and exploring Gozo will be more relaxed.

Victoria (Rabat) and the Citadel

Start your Gozo adventure in Victoria, also known as Rabat, the island’s capital. At its heart stands the Citadel, a fortified city that dates back to medieval times. From its walls, you’ll get a panoramic view of the entire island, as it’s that small, green hills, tiny villages, and the Mediterranean in the distance.

Inside, you can wander cobbled streets, visit the cathedral, or just enjoy the peaceful vibe. We loved exploring the corners and hidden alleys here, it’s charming and cute and we took a lot of photos.

Also, if you have time, book a dinner at Maldonado Bistro Gozo, they offer some tasty food with a french, italian twist.

Ta’ Pinu Basilica

Just a short drive from Victoria, Ta’ Pinu Basilica is one of Gozo’s most iconic landmarks. Built in the early 20th century, it’s not only stunning from the outside but also deeply meaningful to locals. The basilica became famous after a local woman claimed to have heard the Virgin Mary’s voice here, turning it into a site of pilgrimage and prayer. Even if you’re not religious, it’s a beautiful building.

And sunsets here are something else.

Ġgantija Temples

Before you even get to Dwejra Bay, make sure to stop at the Ġgantija Temples, one of the most fascinating places on Gozo, and honestly, not just on Malta. These megalithic temples are over 5.500 years old, which means they’re older than the Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge. When you think about that for a moment, it’s just crazy impressive.

The name Ġgantija means “place of the giants” because locals once believed that only giants could have built something so massive with the technology available at the time, some blocks weighed more than 50 tons.

There’s also a small museum that helps you understand how people lived here thousands of years ago, with tools and artifacts found on-site, you can visit if you want, we skipped it.

Dwejra Bay

Once home to the famous Azure Window (which sadly collapsed in 2017), Dwejra Bay is still one of the most beautiful natural spots on Gozo. The coastline here looks dramatic, the cliffs, caves, and the deep blue sea stretching as far as you can see.

You can take a short boat ride through a tunnel that connects the Inland Sea to the open sea. Even without the Azure Window, the area’s natural beauty makes it worth the visit.

Blue Hole

Right next to it is Blue Hole, a natural rock formation that created a circular “pool” right next to the sea. It looks like a perfect hole carved into the rocks, filled with incredibly clear, deep blue water, and then connected to the open sea through an underwater arch. It’s actually one of the most famous diving spots in Malta, but even if you’re not diving, or don’t want to swim it’s fascinating to see. We actually couldn’t locate it, maybe the sea was too rough or something.

Sanap Cliffs

For some of the most surreal views in all of Gozo, head to the Sanap Cliffs on the island’s southern coast. These limestone cliffs rise over 100 meters above the sea, and the views from the top are just breathtaking, endless blue stretching to the horizon, with nothing but the sound of wind and waves below, and the wind.

Come around sunset if you can, the golden light over the sea and cliffs is magical. Though it can get a bit windy here, just watch your step and don’t go near the edge.

Tal-Mixta Cave

For one of the famous views in Malta, head to Tal-Mixta Cave above Ramla Bay. The cave overlooks the bay’s unique red-gold sand, and from inside, the wide opening perfectly frames the beach and the Mediterranean. It’s a perfect postcard photo.

Getting there involves a short walk, but it’s not difficult,. Honestly we think that the view towards the cave is much prettier, maybe because the cave got so crowded and that kinda ruined it a bit for us.

Ramla Bay

Below Tal-Mixta Cave lies Ramla Bay, Gozo’s most famous beach. With its reddish sand and clear, shallow water, it’s ideal for swimming and relaxing. Even in December, some people were enjoying the water. In summer, it’s popular with both locals and tourists, but it’s large enough that you can always find your own spot to unwind. As we are not beachy-type people, we just admired it from afar, from the hill near Tal-Mixta Cave.

Salt Pans of Marsalforn

Along Gozo’s northern coast, near Marsalforn, you’ll find the salt pans. They are shallow pools carved into the rock, that have been used for traditional sea salt production for centuries. The process is still alive today, and you might even see locals scraping salt.

From above, the salt pans look like a giant mosaic of gold and silver, glistening under the sun. If you have a drone, or can climb to an elevated place, don’t miss it. There are smaller salt pans on the main island, but these ones are more uniform and look amazing. You can also buy the salt from a few shops along the road.

Getting to Gozo

To reach Gozo, take the ferry from Ċirkewwa (north of Malta) to Mġarr Harbour on Gozo. The ferry runs frequently and takes around 25 minutes. You can either bring your car on board or rent one once you arrive. Check out our guide on getting to Gozo from Mġarr Harbour or Valletta.

If you’re not driving, there are also organized day tours from Malta that include transport and a local guide.

Gozo might be small, but it’s overflowing with charm, views, and culture. One day is simply enough to visit everything. We like the main island more than Gozo, but enjoyed it either way.
